Mmmmm Good - Huckleberries

Low and High
Hanging Fruit

Bears Love
Huckleberries
Since I finished mowing
down all the weeds before they go to seed - it must be berry picking time.
You may remember how much Yogi Bear and BooBoo his side kick, always went nuts
for huckleberries.   While you may have thought this was some
imaginary berry from a cartoon show - in fact huckleberries are one of brown
bears as well as grizzly bears favorite treats here in the Rocky
Mountains.  We always make plenty of noise and carry our bear spray just in
case when we go out picking these delicious treats.  They kinda of look and
taste like blueberries and go great with pancakes and as preserves.  If you
are ever in Montana, be sure to pick up a jar of Huckleberry Preserves.

While hunting for
and picking these wild huckleberries it came to me that in many ways it is very
similar to selecting and picking niche products and markets.  As we went up
the mountain trail we encountered our first batch of huckleberry bushes.
The berries on these bushes were 75% ripe - as we went higher in elevation we
found some bushes where the berries were still not ripe at all for picking -
after we went over the pass and started going down, we observed how the lower in
elevation we went - the greater the percentage of berries were ripe.  We
then found the motherlode where the berries were nearly 100% ripe.  In less
than an hour we picked over a gallon of huckleberries from that single patch.

Whether you are
marketing an affiliate product or developing and marketing your own product -
you have to determine

1 - exactly who your
target market is
2 - determine what their interest are
3 - determine the keywords and phrases that they will use when searching online
4 - drill down and determine what is referred to as long tail keyword search
terms
5 - Focus your marketing efforts on the higher converting focused search terms

Example:

Say I was going to
sell Huckleberry Preserves online.  My target market are people who want to
purchase huckleberry preserves.  There would be buyers who want as a gift
and there would be buyers who just want to eat some more delicious Huckleberry
Preserves.  Let’s look at what some of their keyword searches would
produce….

If you do a google search for "preserves" there are 24.9 million
results, and using the Adwords Traffic estimator tool I can see that in order to
get a top ranked Adword listing I would pay around $1.59  per click and I
would receive around 50 clicks a day.  But if I was selling say only
Huckleberry Preserves - most likely there would only be a small percentage of
these clicks that would result in sales - for the simple fact that I am using
too broad of a term. In web terms this would be called "high hanging
fruit." Whether you went the seo route and tried to rank for this highly
competitive keyword or you purchased with expensive clicks - it would either be
expensive or very hard to do - heck you are competing with nearly 25 million
websites!

Now if we do a
search for say "huckleberry preserves" we see that there are only
266,000 results  - 1% of the website competition that there is for
preserves.  That is a dramatic difference.  When I run it thru the
Adwords traffic estimator, I also see that there is less traffic but that it is
still a very competitive Adword ad with number 1 position costing around 61
cents per click - with around 10 clicks per day.  However if I was selling
Huckleberry Preserves - with a good sales page I should be able to convert a
good percentage of these clicks into sales - for the simple fact I have narrowed
down the search term and am providing the visitor exactly what they are looking
for.

Now lets
"drill" down a little more and  do a search for "montana
huckleberry preserves" - now google only shows 47,600 results!
Currently there are only 5 advertisers with Adwords and number one spot can be
obtained for less than 25 cents.  For the visitor that uses this search
term they are most likely to be in the search and buy mode so conversions of
these clicks would be higher than the 2 previous search terms.  Granted
there will not be nearly the traffic that there is for preserves - but when you
get a click thru - you have a much greater chance of closing the sale then you
would from a click thru from the keyword "preserves".

This is a perfect
example of low hanging fruit.  Just like when I would pick my huckleberries
- the low hanging fruit was easiest to pick and obtain results.  Also with
only 47k of competing websites - just by using some basic seo and publishing a
few blogs - it would be most likely a search term where you could become a top
10 listing - certainly a lot easier and simpler then going after the keyword
"preserves".

Now certainly there
will not be as many searches for "montana huckleberry preserves" as
there are for "preserves", but if I were to come up with 50 -100 - 200
of these low hanging fruit search terms such as huckleberry jam, northwest
huckleberry preserves, missoula montana huckleberry preserves, etc., even if a
person only got one click every other day from these search terms, you could
very easily end up with more traffic then if you had just used the high hanging
search term of "preserves"

So what we end up
with by using low hanging fruit is:

Low website Competition - easier to achieve top listing with natural search
Low Adword Competition - easier to achieve best Adword Position
Very Low Cost Clicks for top positions - lower marketing costs
Highly targeted visitors - easier to convert into buyers

The problem with
using the low hanging fruit method of marketing however is keeping track of
hundreds of keyword phrases and determining which ones are bringing you sales
and which ones are not.  No one bats 1000 - and one of the keys to
affiliate marketing or marketing your own product is to determine the keyword
phrase campaigns that are not profitable and eliminating them.

Up until this time
watching over hundreds or thousands of keyword phrases was a very difficult and
time consuming task.  But since Affiliate
Radar

http://www.reviewsbyray.com/radar3
you can now have a systemized way to watch literally thousands of keyword
phrases. I have been able to exponentially increase my number of keyword
campaigns and increase my profits.   Affiliate
Radar
is the perfect match for  implementing and monitoring
the low hanging fruit marketing method.  It certainly gets five out of
five stars from me!
